Elevated Gardens for Engaged Communities
Starting with observations of the tension between public access and garden security, this project reimagines the traditionally fenced community garden as a multi-level public amenity that spans across a street. To bridge the divide between protection and accessibility, the design proposes a vertical farming facility that maintains security while maximizing public engagement through three key programs: an elevated greenhouse with viewing platforms, a farm-to-table kitchen with educational spaces, and a ground-level market square. Each of these elements creates opportunities for public interaction with urban agriculture without compromising the garden’s security needs, transforming the typical ground-bound, fenced garden into a three-dimensional civic space.
